Date set for indexation High Court appeal
The union-led appeals against the government’s indexation switch will go ahead later this month and coincide with a protest against the changes outside the court.
The two separate appeals against a ruling last year backing the decision to use the Consumer Prices Index rather than the Retail Prices Index to uprate pension benefits will be heard together on 20 February.
Prospect, the FDA, GMB and National Union of Teachers, together with the Civil Service Pensioner's Alliance, and a group of six unions including Unite lodged the appeals last month.
The initial calls for a judicial review, which were rejected by the High Court, were grouped together and the appeals will also now be heard in one session.
Unite said it would be organising a demonstration outside the court on the morning of the hearing, in a bid to raise awareness of the appeal.
GMB national secretary for public services Brian Strutton: said "GMB consider that the High Court was wrong in fact and in law regarding this change to long standing employment contracts which cuts pensions in payment by 15% and more.
"That is the reason GMB, with the other unions, is mounting this robust legal challenge to that decision".

Public sector pensions
GMB is committed to ensuring public sector pensions are a viable, sustainable and secure means for workers to save for retirement. GMB ballots for official industrial action over the pension cuts proposed by the government opened on 31st October until 16th November. The first strike day will be on 30th November if GMB members vote for action.

Save Remploy factories
Remploy factories are under threat of closure when current funding ends in April 2013. In the meantime, the factories are being rendered less successful as public bodies are failing to support them with work as allowed under EU rules. GMB is actively campaigning to keep Remploy factories open and keep them productive.

Four Seasons care homes
145 of the plighted Southern Cross care homes will transfer to Four Seasons Healthcare. GMB is the union for staff at these homes. Union leaders are warning that this transfer is very worrying as Four Seasons Healthcare is saddled with debts of £790m. GMB has called on the Care Quality Commission to establish whether Four Seasons Healthcare actually has the financial stability to take on the additional homes.

Schools
GMB is the union for school support staff. We campaigned for national terms and conditions for this sector of the workforce for many years. Eventually, we persuaded the last government that school support staff need to be treated with the same respect as teachers, with their own national pay and conditions framework.
GMB is part of the Schools Support Staff National Negotiating Body (SSSNB) which was set up to design a national pay and conditions framework for support staff in all maintained schools in England
