On 5th August 2007 Jeff Hart suffered a nasty back injury whilst he was working for Wigan MBC. The Council refused to accept any responsibility for Jeff’s injury and not only blamed him, but also questioned Jeff’s honesty. Despite 30 years legal service with the Council which came to an end with Jeff’s retirement in November 2010, they refused to consider settlement of his case and the day after he retired, Jeff had to appear at Court to fight his claim for compensation. At the end of the first day in Court, it was clear that the Council had been defeated in their suggestions that Jeff was not telling the truth, but they still refused to settle and the case had to come back to Court the next day. After all the evidence was heard, Jeff won his case and was awarded £5,000 in compensation. Jeff was able to take his case to Court thanks to the legal assistance provided to him as a GMB member. Without that legal assistance and support from the Union and its legal team at Simpsons, Jeff might not have obtained the compensation which he so clearly deserved.
